The West is afraid to admit the invasion, even when the tanks of Russia are in Ukraine – Saakashvili.
Recently it’s been six years since that time, as Russia invaded Georgia. And today the President of Ukraine meets with Vladimir Putin to talk about peace in Ukraine. While the West continues to make the same mistakes in counteraction against Russian aggression, like six years ago.
About it, today, writes ex-President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili on the page of the publication The Foreign Policy. He wondered how it happened that the EU and the USA were not ready to deal with the Russian aggression, if the invasion script is the same as it was in Georgia.
“We have already seen this Putin’s game earlier, which is to rise bet, hoping that the West will fear the growth of tension. Even sanctions of the USA, the EU and their allies don’t indicate that Russia will be punished for its gambling”, writes Saakashvili, recalling that in 2008, the Kremlin didn’t receive an economic punishment.
The West still sends signals that allow Putin to maneuver. In particular, though, Angela Merkel arrived in Kiev to express support to Ukraine, but still asks the President Petro Poroshenko not to break the terrorist forces in the East of Ukraine and to seek a peaceful exit. And officials in her government urged Kiev to agree on the “federalization” and not to destroy the militants, “in order not to irritate Moscow“.
“At the same time, European leaders refuse to say the word “invasion”, even when Russian tanks and armored columns crossed the border of Ukraine and a half of the fighters on the Ukrainian territory are soldiers of the Russian army. The Ukrainian government is also not in a hurry to talk about the Ukrainian-Russian war”, is said in the article.
And before the visit to Minsk, Putin was preparing from the military position, sending hard columns of militants and weapons to the East of Ukraine. This has allowed him to “strengthen the position and role of his puppets in the conflict and to start talking about the so-called peacekeepers”.
He wants to make a new “frozen conflict” to destabilize Ukraine with the revitalization of the militants, gas blackmail and undermine the fragile Ukrainian economy.
“Putin knows that Poroshenko is not in the position to increase his pressure and to gain support for his “peace plan” in Minsk. Therefore, the Kremlin continues to operate under the old scheme: accuses Ukrainians in not constructibility, planning a full-scale attack on Ukraine later. We have already seen in Georgia, after the West refused unacceptable conditions of Moscow”, stated in the article.
According to Saakashvili, really effective way out of the situation is very difficult and expensive.
“We need to stand firmly on the side of Ukraine. To do this, the EU should stop trying to “tie the hands” of Poroshenko and undermine Ukrainian morale. Europe must also be ready to introduce new tougher sanctions against Russia and to ensure Kiev financial support”, writes ex-President of Georgia.
He also notices that all pleas for diplomacy, Putin will perceive as a sign of weakness of the West. It will push him for more decisive actions.
