Place of birth, education. Arseniy Avakov was born in Baku in a military family. Since 1966 he lives in Ukraine. In 1988 graduated Kharkiv Polytechnic University, specializing in automated control systems (was qualified systems engineer).
Career. In 1987 – 1990, he worked as an engineer for Kharkiv Research Institute on Water Protection. He was engaged in scientific activities, in particular, the issues of mathematical modeling.
In 1990, he founded one of the first joint stock companies in Ukraine – Investor JSC, there he served as President.
In 1992, founded and headed a Basis Commercial Bank.
In 2002, Avakov was elected a member of the Executive Committee of Kharkiv City Council.
February 4, 2005 by the decree of the President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko, whom Avakov actively had supported on the elections of 2004, was appointed the head of the Regional State Administration in Kharkiv. On the same day, as specified in the official biography, he resigned from his positions at Investor JSC and Basis Commercial Bank.
February 5, 2010 on the eve of the re-voting in presidential elections, was dismissed the Head of Kharkiv regional state administration. Having expressed his support to Yulia Tymoshenko, who had passed the second round of presidential elections, estimated that dismissal illegal. He considered the president’s decision to release on the eve of the second round of presidential elections the governors of two largest regions Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkiv, nonrandom. According to Avakov, that decree was aimed at destabilization the situation in regions, in order to provide Viktor Yanukovych – the rival to Tymoshenko – in particular, in Kharkiv region, the voting results similar to those that were in 2005.
One of the deputies of the former governor of Kharkiv region was Yaroslav Yushchenko a nephew of the President of Ukraine – the son of the President’s eldest brother Petro Yushchenko.
Avakov was a member of pro-Yushchenko party “Our Ukraine” and its presidium. Since 2006 he was a deputy of Kharkiv Regional Council from “Our Ukraine”, a deputy of the Committee on Budgetary Issues. Since 2010 – Avakov was a deputy of Regional Committee from All-Ukrainian Union “Batkivshchyna” (the leader is Tymoshenko). He headed the Kharkiv regional organization “Batkivshchyna”.
Since December of 2012 Avakov was a people’s deputy of Ukraine of the seventh convocation of the party “Batkivshchyna” (number 24 on the list). A member of the Committee on regulations issues, MPs’s ethics and support of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
February 27, 2014 was appointed as Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine in government of Arseniy Yatsenyuk. As the head of Internal Affairs he replaced Vitaliy Zakharchenko.
Among Avakov’s longtime opponents are representatives from the Party of regions. The most implacable foes are regionals: Mykhailo Dobkin, Hennadiy Kernes and Vasyl Salygin, former head of Kharkiv regional Council.
Status and assets. In February 2008, the magazine Focus put Avakov on the 67th place in the list of 130 richest Ukrainians. The magazine’s experts evaluated fortune of governor of Kharkiv region in $385 million. It was noted that a year earlier it was $300 million.
Avakov is honored economist of Ukraine. The author of 12 scientific publications and one monograph.
Family. The politician is married and has a son.
Charity. Avakov as an individual is a co-founder of several charitable organizations.
Fund named after Marianne Avakova provides assistance to orphanages, boarding schools, orphans.
Charitable organization “Star Bridge” engaged in holding the annual international festival of science fiction, publishing fiction, social and educational activities in orphanages, schools and universities.
