Age: 43 years
Education: Drohobych State Pedagogical University named after Ivan Franko
The leader of “Right Sector”, the ideologist of Ukrainian volunteer corps
Candidate for district #39 Dnipropetrovsk region
One of the clearest childhood memories of Dmitry Yarosh is – the teacher of Ukrainian language Eleanor Dmitrievna. It was she from whom Yarosh (he was in fourth form) first heard about Stepan Bandera and the URA. “Then my consciousness began to clear up”, – he says.
Dmitry Yarosh was born and raised in Russian-speaking Dniprodzerzhinsk, Dnipropetrovsk region. At the age of 17 became a member of People’s Movement of Ukraine, in his hometown he was the first who hung out the Ukrainian flag. For his native places – it was rather an anomaly.
Dmitry Yarosh calls his spiritual mentor Vasyl Ivanishin, the founder of the nationalist organization “Trident” named after Stepan Bandera. Vasyl Ivanishin also was a lecturer in Drohobych Pedagogical University – in this University Yarosh received specialty: “A teacher of Ukrainian language and literature”.
In 1994 Yarosh headed regional department of the “Trident”; in this organization he has worked in various management positions for 20 years, in fact, till Euromaidan. In early December, after the students were beaten on Maidan, a number of nationalist organizations – “Trident”, “Patriot of Ukraine”, “White hummer”, UNA-UNSO – were united in “Right Sector”, which was headed by Dmitry Yarosh.
It was the “Right Sector” who became the military wing of the Maidan.
February 20, 2014 Viktor Yanukovych met with Dmitry Yarosh and offered a truce, but Yarosh refused. Instead, the “Right Sector” demanded the resignation of President and complete “reset” of the government.
Since the beginning of the ATO, “Right Sector” began to form Ukrainian volunteer corps. Now there are about 10 thousand soldiers in it, 600 of them are fighting in the East of the country, including in the team of “cyborgs” of Donetsk airport.
We have self-organized and know what we want – and that’s why we began to engage in political activities. We will change the situation by political means – thus, in order to the ideals of Maidan were implemented. Every society divides into those who lead and who are led. Those who lead are always in the minority. In this active minority we have occupied our niche.
Nationalism for us is – first of all – the national idea, the idea of independence of Ukrainian nation on the Ukrainian land. What is the difference between nationalism and patriotism? It’s not just emotions, but concrete actions for the benefit of our people. Nationalists were sacrificed themselves on the Maidan, and now sacrifice in the ATO’s area.
Humanity develops in sinusoid: first the national idea was replaced by tolerance and globalism. But now many European countries at the highest level recognize the idea of multiculturalism as mistake.
Almost there is no country in Europe in which national ways of development aren’t being discussed. Organizations of traditionalistic direction begin to gain weight and strength again.
I have told many times – we don’t advocate totalitarian state. Ukraine is not the country, where the dictatorship can settle down. We are for normal state, in which the best economic models can be implemented.
I like the example of Singapore, examples of European countries, the idea of liberalization an economic life.
Now there are great contradictions in the world. We have all chances to become a strong country. If we use this chance, we will become a country that will unite. We will become a subjective country.
We, as a party, are primarily interested in the maximum decentralization, the establishment of the national democracy – when people can decide and choose, for example, the head of the police or the court. And have tools of control over them, over allocation of resources, making decisions in social, cultural and other spheres.
Now there are a lot of adequate people going on the lists of other parties. We can form a strong “fist” that in the Parliament will fight for the interests of the people.
Someone complains on guys from “Right Sector” that they are engaged now in so-called national lustration. I don’t condemn. There is not enough “lustration”. On the other hand, it is a response to the lack of concrete actions in this direction from the authorities. People take the reins into their own hands and do what they want. Thank God that they (the government – as amended) are not being shot.
If blood begins to flow in the rear, Moscow will definitely use it against us. FSS agents actively working to ensure that in Kyiv there will a critical mass of people who are dissatisfied. My people were not there, under the Rada (during clashes on October 14 – as amended), because now it can tear the country, the government simply will fall.
Talking about what we will do in the Parliament, we have a package of bills about revocation of people’s deputies, the removal of parliamentary immunity. And, of course, the main priority is the war and the formation of a strong army.
The first thing we need to do now is to provide normally the army and volunteer battalions with everything they need to fight in winter. And only after this talk about the Wall and other fortifications on the Ukrainian-Russian border. Now the guys don’t have basic things – winter clothing, generators.
Our Revolution of Dignity was also anti oligarchic. Oligarchs for us are temporary companions. If Kolomoisky now has a position of the statesman, we support him. But when they start raiding, then we will have to fight them. We were called private army of Kolomoisky – but Kolomoisky knows that we are not his private army.
We exist thanks to donations, support of small business. For example, the election campaign in my district is being financed by local farmers.
We call the Donetsk airport the meat grinder. We have grinded hundreds, thousands of Russian militaries and so-called “insurgents” there. By the spring we could plan a victory, of course, if the state government will have the political will.
We don’t support the decision to give to Donetsk region a special status. Any agreement with Russia is not worth the paper on which it is signed.
We have decided for ourselves that if politicians freeze the conflict and give to Russia a part of our territory, and even that side doesn’t go on the offensive, the “Right Sector” will begin active guerilla war in occupied territories. We will make them to give up. And, besides, there will – you will see! – raise the rebellion.
At all tragedy, the war has always raised the society to a new level.
I feel better on the war. If there is a war, I will not be in the Parliament, but on the front line.
