The National Guard of Ukraine – is a military formation with law-enforcement functions, included in the system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine and assigned to perform tasks on protecting and security the lives, rights, freedoms and legitimate interests of Ukrainian citizens, society and the state from criminal and other illegal activities, security of public order and public safety, and also in cooperation with law-enforcement agencies to ensure state safety and the state border defense, suppress terrorist activity, activity of illegal armed groups, terrorist organizations, organized groups and criminal organizations.

The National Guard of Ukraine in accordance with the law in cooperation with Armed Forces of Ukraine to repel an armed aggression against Ukraine and the elimination of armed conflict by military (combat) actions, and also for the tasks of territorial defense.
It existed since 1991 to 2000, was restored on the basis of internal troops with involving of new military personnel on March 13, 2014.

The National Guard plays great role in anti-terrorist operation in the East of Ukraine. Thus, on April 15, 2014 three hundred and fifty fighters of the National Guard were sent to the area of Slavyansk for the liberation of the city from terrorists, who had captured it on April 12. On May 9, 2014 the National Guard participated in operation on liberation of hostages from Police building in Mariupol. As a result of operation, according to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arseniy Avakov, were eliminated 20 armed separatists. During the confrontation were killed the head of Mariupol city traffic police – Lieutenant Colonel Viktor Sayenko and commander of Dnipropetrovsk brigade of the territorial defense – Sergey Demidenko. During the special operation a group of “insurgents” was captured by Ukrainian law-enforcers; among them was the “Minister of Defense” of self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic – Igor Kakidzyanov.
